La Rioja hermitages constitute a fundamental part of our heritage. The four cardinal points of our region are dotted with these discreet constructions, which so often go unnoticed. There are many mountains and hills, valleys, valleys, meadows and orchards that have one of these exceptional witnesses to our history. This book proposes to the reader a pilgrimage, real or imaginary, through many of the most unique corners of our land; in all of them, each hermitage —with its unalterable beauty— fits perfectly into the natural environment. An adventure through Rioja lands full of history and nature.

After more than twenty years photographing La Rioja throughout its territory, I have discovered that there are many different landscapes in our community, from the most virgin and natural to the most modified by the hand of man. Over time I have perceived the important figure of the hermitages in our landscapes, existing in almost all their geography, from the most populated and rural environments to the most remote and undisturbed. In this publication I have simply wanted to highlight those hermitages built in exceptional places or of great landscape value. These being only a part of the total set of La Rioja hermitages that exceed several hundred. For the realization of this book I have taken hundreds of photographs and hundreds of kilometers at different times during 3 and a half years. They have been moments of great patience waiting for the right moment of desired light, and on many occasions they have been trips in vain without any success due to the weather or other circumstances. The obsession with achieving the ideal light and angle in each hermit landscape has led to a long and patient wait to finally conclude this project. This publication is not only a tribute to our people who for several generations have worshiped and respected these sites, but also to those who for one reason or another thought it appropriate to build the hermitages in these specific corners, full of magic, and above all calm and often apart. Built there where even today we can enjoy them, hoping that it will also be so for many centuries / decades. It is therefore a publication open to all those who want to discover at their own pace this wonderful heritage of great historical and natural value.
